The cheapest cruise in the world is not a bargain if you pay a fortune to reach the ship. On short notice, getting to the port is often the deciding factor.

Flying on Short Notice

Airfares usually rise as departure approaches, and last-minute seats on popular routes can cost more than the cruise. Before you book a late sailing, price the flights first. Then plan to arrive the day before embarkation; a delayed or cancelled flight on sailing day can mean missing the ship. Our sister site Cruise Airfare covers cruise line air programs, booking your own flights and when to fly in before a cruise.

If your flights are booked through the cruise line’s own air program, ask what happens if a flight is delayed; if you book independently, you are responsible for getting to the ship on time.

Driving to the Port

Last-minute cruising works best for people who can drive to a homeport. Florida, Texas, California, the Northeast and other regions have ports with sailings most weeks, so a quick getaway can be just a tank of gas away. Check port parking before you leave: lots near busy terminals can fill on peak days, and some ports ask you to reserve ahead. Our sister site Free Cruise Parking explains how cruise port parking works, along with shuttles, rideshare and park-and-cruise hotels that bundle a night’s stay with parking.

Pre-Cruise Night on Short Notice

Hotels near cruise ports can sell out on busy weekends, especially when several ships sail on the same day. Book the room at the same time as the cruise. If you cannot find one close to the terminal, a hotel near the airport with a reliable taxi or rideshare service to the port is a good fallback.

Packing When You Leave in a Hurry

Short notice leaves little time to shop. Pack documents, medications and chargers first, then clothes for warm days, a cooler evening and any formal or theme night on the ship’s schedule. If you are flying, keep a change of clothes and essentials in your carry-on in case checked luggage is late. For printable lists, see our sister site Cruising Checklist.
